Topic 2: The Condor

Watch this video: It is about Mailén, a young female Condor. Mailén returns to its habitat after some doctors rescue and cure her. She is happy because she is free again.

Topic 2: The Condor

Watch the video and listen to the song. The famous Spanish opera singer Placido Domingo sings. See how the images accompany the words.

You can sing now:

El Cóndor Pasa

El cóndor de los Andes despertó
Con la luz
De un feliz amanecer,

Sus alas lentamente desplegó
Y bajó al río azul
Para beber

Chorus:
Tras él la tierra se cubrió
De verdor, de amor y paz
Tras él la rama floreció
Y el sol brotó
En el trigal,
En el trigal,

El cóndor de los andes descendió
Al llegar un feliz amanecer
El cielo al ver su marcha sollozó
Y volcó su llanto gris
Cuando se fue,

Chorus

Topic 2: The Condor

The Condor is a very big bird. It is the biggest flying bird in the world.
It is black and white. The male has got brown eyes and a red crest on the head.

The female is smaller than the male. It has got red eyes. It hasn’t got a crest.

The Condor lives on the Andes Mountains in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina. In Argentina it lives on the Andes and in Patagonia.

The Condor is a bird of prey, but it doesn’t hunt. It eats meat from dead animals.

The Condor can fly very high. It can fly up to 6,000 metres.
When it opens the wings it can be 3 metres long.

It sleeps and nests in high caves.

The female lays only one egg every two years. The egg is white and it is 10 cm long.

The chicks can fly after six months, but they stay in the nest with the parents for one year.

The Condor can live for over 60 years.

The Condor is in danger of extinction because the man is advancing over its habitat.
